Obtaining a Danish Passport

Introduction of biometric passports

From 1 January 2012 Denmark has introduced new biometric passports. This requires special equipment to record the data required (photo and fingerprints).

From 1 January 2012 all passports issued to applicants 12 years and over will be biometric passports. Applications for biometric passports can in New Zealand be made only at the Consulate-General in Auckland, which has the equipment required to capture the biometric data. The biometric equipment in Auckland is available until May 20th 2013 and again from July 15th 2013 and onwards. A time must be booked in advance. A list of Danish representations in other countries that can also issue biometric passports can be found here.

For applicants under the age of 12 fingerprints are not captured. They can therefore make their application for a Danish passport at any Danish Consulate in New Zealand. For the documentation requirements, see below.

All Danish Consulates can issue emergency passports and extend existing passports provided they have not expired more than three months ago.

For contact details please click here.

Documentation required

The following documentation is required:

  • Two copies of the application form, which can be downloaded here. If you are under 18 years of age the parental consent section on page three must be completed by your parent(s) or guardian(s). If there is only one parent or guardian, evidence of this must be provided.

  • The previous Danish passport and a copy of the page with your photograph. If a Danish passport has not been issued previously, please provide a copy of your birth certificate, showing the name of the parents and a copy of your Danish parent’s passport. If only the father is Danish, a copy of the parents’ marriage certificate must be provided. Please note that if you were not born in Denmark, and you have reached the age of 22, evidence of continued Danish citizenship must be provided.

  • Parental consent. Please note that all applicants under the age of 18 require parental consent to have a passport issued, even if a passport has been issued in the past. Both parents or guardians must sign the declaration on page 3 of the application form. If there is only one parent or guardian, evidence for this must be produced.

  • Passport photos. If you are under the age of 12, please provide two passport photos. Passport photos taken by a passport photographer in New Zealand will generally meet the requirements. If in doubt, please download the specification here.

  • The passport fee (see the fees section below)

Fee for services provide outside office hours

It occasionally happens that a matter must be dealt with urgently outside normal office hours. This attracts an additional fee. Please see product codes 907 and 908 in the fees list, about half-way down the first page.

Delivery of the new passport

The new passport will ordinarily be sent to you by mail. Before it can be sent to you, you will need to surrender your old passport to the Danish Mission concerned. However, it is possible to specify that you wish to collect your new passport in Denmark at a Borger Service office or at another Danish Mission abroad, or the nearest Danish Consulate.

Your personal responsibility

It is your responsibility, when using an emergency passport, or a passport that has been extended, to ensure that any visas required have been placed in your emergency/extended passport and that the countries you intend to travel to accept emergency/extended passports.

You also need to ensure that the proposed new expiry date corresponds to the requirements of the country you are travelling to, i.e. some countries require the passport to be valid for 3 to 6 months beyond the date on which you will leave that country again.
